Correspondence and other papers concerning the Aldeburgh Festival and associated matters.
This is mainly correspondence between Britten, Festival officials and many correspondents concerning Festival issues such as arrangements, finances, programme, performers, casting, exhibitions, venues, and invitations to performers.
There are also many other papers including, minutes, for example, for the Aldeburgh Festival Council, Jubilee Hall Management Committee and Festival Choir, accounts and balance sheets, provisional festival programmes, and draft programme notes for the festival programme books.
The files include correspondence and papers concerning the opening of the Snape Maltings Concert Hall in 1967.
There are also extensive correspondence and papers concerning the fire at Snape Maltings in 1969 and the rebuilding of the hall, including letters of sympathy and offers of help, letters re the rebuilding appeal and donations, and Aldeburgh Festival Appeal Committee minutes and associated papers.
In some cases, letters concerning the arrangements for a particular Festival will be filed for the year of that Festival (e.g letters from 1959 about the 1960 Aldeburgh Festival appear in the 1960 file.)
