Leaflet giving the programme of performances for the sixteenth Festival which opened with an early evening Festival Service followed by a performance of the new production by the English Opera Group of Britten's The Beggar's Opera. Much of the Festival was dedicated to the celebration of the quatercentenary of the birth of John Dowland and the main focus for this was a collaboration between Imogen Holst and the BBC Transcription Service on seven concerts entitled Dowland and his Contemporaries. There was also a recital by Peter Pears and Julian Bream of Dowland's Lute Songs and Solos.
Other significant productions that year included the first performance of Britten's Cello Symphony and first public performance of his Psalm 150. (In addition there were also performances of St. Nicolas and Rejoice in the Lamb). Work by Imogen Holst (String Trio No. 2), Rainier (Quanta), and Bedford (Piece Two (Electronic Music)) also had their first public performances at the Festival.
