Leaflet giving the programme of performances for the seventeenth Festival which began with a performance in Ely Cathedral of Britten's War Requiem. The English Opera Group presented first performances of Britten's Curlew River and Williamson's English Eccentrics. Other pieces of Britten's performed that year were his Nocturnal (first performance) and his Symphony for Cello and Orchestra Op. 68, (first performance in England). There was another series of programmes - six concerts entitled Bach and his Predecessors - presented by Imogen Holst and the BBC Transcription Service, and A Tuesday Invitation Concert presented by the BBC Third Programme which included first performances in England for Henze's Six Absences for harpsichord and Lucy Escott Variations. Haydn's Cello Concerto in C major also received its first performance in England here as part of an orchestral concert given by Rostropovich and the English Chamber Orchestra.
Other events included a memorial concert marking the life of Francis Poulenc who died the previous year and a bicentenary (of his death) concert celebrating the work of Jean-Philippe Rameau.
