Leaflet giving the programme of performances for the nineteenth Festival which began with a Choral and Orchestral Concert in Ely Cathedral and included two of Britten's pieces, his Sinfonia da Requiem and his Voices of Today. The English Opera Group presented the first performance of Britten's second parable for church performance, The Burning Fiery Furnace and a new production of Handel's Acis and Galatea. Other noteworthy performances included Haydn's The Creation which was conducted by Britten and Schubert's Winterreise. There were performances by visiting choirs and orchestras including the Manitoba University Consort, the Hart House Orchestra of Canada which gave two concerts, the second of which included a performance of Britten's Les Illuminations, and the Boys' Choir of the Royal Chapel, Copenhagen. Stevenson's Passacaglia on DSCH also received its first performance in England.
There was a series of five half-hour programmes devised by Imogen Holst on East Anglian Church Music 1013-1931, which were presented by the BBC Transcription Service, a tribute to Percy Grainger and a concert in memory of Edith Sitwell during which, alongside a number of poetry readings, new organ pieces by Berkeley and Williamson, and Britten's Canticle III were performed.
Other events included showings in association with the British Film Institute, in Aldeburgh Cinema of Kozinsev's Hamlet (with music by Shostakovich) and Antonioni's classic film, L'Avventura.
