The concert included the first performance of Benjamin Britten's overture The Building of the House. Britten said that the work 'was certainly inspired by the excitement of the planning and building - and the haste!'. The programme is signed by the three artistic directors of the Aldeburgh Festival: Britten, Peter Pears and Imogen Holst.
