Leaflet providing the programme of performances for the twenty-third Festival which opened with Music for a Royal Occasion which was performed in the presence of Her Majesty The Queen and His Royal Highness The Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh.
The Festival included the world premiere of Henze's Song Cycle: El Cimarron, the first performance outside the USSR of Shostakovich's Symphony No. 14, the first UK performance of Walton's Improvisations on an Impromptu of Benjamin Britten, and first performances of Arthur Bliss' Concertino for Cello and Orchestra and Fricker's Paseo Op. 61.
Pears, Britten and John Shirley-Quirk combined on a recital of Schubert's Last Songs and The English Opera Group presented operas by Mozart (Indomeneo) and Britten, (Curlew River and The Rape of Lucretia). Other works by Britten which were performed included his Cello Symphony, Who are These Children? and Lachrymae.
The seventieth birthdays of Noël Coward (which was honoured with a tribute concert entitled Where are the Songs we Sung? and included performances by Joyce Grenfell and Jeremy Brett), and Aaron Copland were celebrated.
The BBC Transcription Service presented five half-hour programmes devised by Imogen Holst on Spanish Music and performances by the Cambridge University Madrigal Society, Radu Lupu (winner of the 1969 Leeds International Pianoforte Competition) and the Royal Liverpool Philarmonic Orchestra.
Other events included a nature walk, the second successive church crawl and concerts celebrating the work of composers such as Bach, Shostakovich, Dvorák and Mozart. In the Aldeburgh Cinema there were showings of An Actor's Revenge, The Winged Aristocrats, Memories of Underdevelopment and Fra Diavolo - Auber's opera transposed by Laurel and Hardy.
