Leaflet providing the programme of performances for the twenty-fourth Festival which was attended by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth, The Queen Mother (on Sunday 13 June) and opened with the English Opera Group's production of the Dryden and Purcell collaboration, King Arthur, his Magical History.
Britten's opera, Noye's Fludde was performed and there was a first performance for his Canticle IV: Journey of the Magi. There were also first performances for Bennett's Oboe Concerto, a new work by John Dankworth, Sebastian Forbes' Song Cycle and Ronald Stevenson's Song Cycle: Border Boyhood. Other concerts included performances by the John Dankworth Orchestra, the Northern Sinfonia Orchestra, the English Consort of Violins and Radu Lupu. In addition, Elgar's The Dream of Gerontius was performed by the Chorus and Orchestra of the Cambridge University Musical Society along with the choristers of King's College, Cambridge.
Other events included the third consecutive church crawl, an evening of Wine and Music from Burgundy and concerts celebrating the work of composers such as Bartók and Janácek, Tchaikovsky and Rossini, and Bach and Mozart. In the Aldeburgh Cinema there were showings of three films by René Clair: Sous Les Toits de Paris, Le Million and I Married a Witch.
