Leaflet providing the programme of performances for the twenty-fifth Festival, the advent of which was marked by a celebratory firework display.
Britten's, Third Suite for Cello (Op. 87) had its first performance here and a number of his other works were revisited: The Four Sea Interludes and Passacaglia from Peter Grimes, Who are these Children?, Songs and Proverbs of William Blake, Simple Symphony, Rejoice in the Lamb and Britten's opera, The Turn of the Screw were all performed during the course of the Festival.
The English Opera Group gave the first performances of Gardner's The Visitors and The Lowestoft Theatre Centre presented the first performance of Gordon Crosse's new musical, Wheel of the World. Other first performances included works by J¢rgen Jersild (Harp Symphony), Vagn Holmboe (Ballad) and Blake (The Bones of Chuang Tzu).
Handel's Saul and Schumann's Scenes from Goethe's Faust were also part of the programme as was a series of late night concerts celebrating the music of Bach.
Other events included two evenings of Schubert and Wine, a concert of Elizabethan Music and church crawl, and in the Aldeburgh Cinema there were showings of three early films by Alfred Hitchcock: The Man Who Knew Too Much, Secret Agent and The Lady Vanishes.
