The score contains three sketches written by Peter Pears headed Interludes I, II, and III. The manuscript contains a note on the verso written by Rosamund Strode and dated 1980. This states that the sketches were written from memory to remind Britten of the Ballad Tunes when revisions to Paul Bunyan were initially being discussed in 1973.
