Texts chosen by Peter Pears from the 'Songs of Experience', the 'Auguries of Innocence' and the 'Proverbs of Hell' by William Blake. The original title for the work was 'Songs and Sentences of William Blake'. Britten made an independent setting of 'A Poison Tree' thirty years earlier in 1935. The dedication reads 'For Dieter: the past and the future'.
