Cantata academica, carmen basiliense
For soprano, alto, tenor and bass solos, chorus and orchestra
Op. 62
Sep 1959
Text taken from the University's charter and from orations in praise of Basle by Bernard Wyss. The dedication reads 'Composuit Universitati Basiliensi, sollemnia saecularia quinta celebranti, dedicavit Benjamin Britten MCMLX'. The Tema seriale con fuga was used in the Concerto for Ochestra and Alba for organ by Richard Rodney Bennett. The same theme was also used as the base for Bennett's, Nicholas Maw's and Malcolm Williamson's fiftieth birthday tribute (to Britten) 'Reflections on a theme of Benjamin Britten' for flute, bassoon, viola and harp (1963).
