The production opened at the Hungarian State Opera House, Budapest, in 1960; Benjamin Britten and Peter Pears enjoyed the 50th performance in 1964.
As was customary for a repertory piece, the opera was staged with a double cast. In one Lady Billows was Lili Neményi; Florence, her housekeeper, Anna Németh; Miss Wordsworth head teacher at the School, Máriá Gyurkovics; Mr Gedge the Vicar, Dr. Imre Palló; Mr Upfold The Mayor József Göndöcs; Superintendant Budd, László Domahidy; Sid the Butcher's assistant, András Varga; Albert Herring from the greengrocer's, Sándor Palcsó; Nancy from the bakery, Erzsébet Komlóssy; Mrs Herring, Albert's mother, Margit Szilvássy; the village children: Emmie, Erzsébet Házy; Cis, Valéria Koltay and Harry, András Fehér.
