The Royal Opera House, Covent Garden presented the English Opera Group with the English Chamber Orchestra in this production, which opened with two performances during the Aldeburgh Festival on 20 and 22 June, 1962 in the Jubilee Hall. It was then transferred to Sadler's Wells for performances on June 26, 28, 29. In 1964 there were overseas tours to Russia and on October 5 and 7 performances in Riga, Latvia, returning to the U.K. for provincial performances which ended with three at the 1965 Edinburgh Festival.
The original cast was: Lady Billows, Sylvia Fisher; Florence Pike, her housekeeper, Monica Sinclair; Miss Wordsworth head teacher at the School, Jennifer Vyvyan; Mr Gedge the Vicar, John Noble; Mr Upfold, the Mayor, Edgar Evans; Superintendant Budd, Harold Blackburn; Sid the Butcher's assistant, Michael Maurel; Albert Herring from the greengrocer's, Kenneth Macdonald; Nancy from the bakery, Catherine Wilson; Mrs Herring, Albert's mother, Sheila Rex; the village children Emmie, Sheila Amit; Cis, Anne Pashley and Harry, Kevin Platts.
