The original production opened at The Arts Theatre, Cambridge with 8 performances 24 – 29 May 1948. It then toured the Netherlands from 25 June to 1 July in the Holland Festival; the Cheltenham Festival 5, 8, 9 and 10 July; Knokke 21 and 22 July; Sadler's Wells with 8 performances between 6 and 18 September; Birmingham 27,28,30 September, 2 October; People's Palace, London, 11, 12,14, 15 and 16 October. The cast and production forces were the following: Macheath, Peter Pears; Polly, Nancy Evans; Lucy, Rose Hill; Peachum, George James; Lockit, Otakar Kraus; Mrs Peachum, Flora Nielsen; Filch, Norman Platt; Mrs Trapes (also The Beggar and Dolly Trull), Gladys Parr; Mrs Coaxer, Catherine Lawson; Mrs Vixen, Lesley Duff; Betty Doxy, Mildred Watson; Jenny Diver, Jennifer Vyvyan; Mrs Slammekin, Elisabeth Parry; Suky Tawdry, Lily Kettlewell; Molly Brazen, Anne Sharp; Mat of the Mint, Norman Lumsden; Ben, Denis Dowling; Harry Paddington, Roy Ashton; Ned (and the Jailer), Max Worthley; Wat Dreary (and the Drawer), John Highcock. A few cast changes were made in September and October when Norman Lumsden shared the role of Peachum, John Highcock Mat o' the Mint and Albert Balaam Wat Dreary.
The conductor was Benjamin Britten (except 6 and 9 July; 7,9,11,14, 17 and 28 September; 12 and 15 October, when Ivan Clayton conducted); English Opera Group Chamber Orchestra (leader, Jack Kessler); Producer, Tyrone Guthrie; stage and costume designer, Tanya Moiseiwitsch.
