The production opened at The Jubilee Hall, Aldeburgh, in the third Aldeburgh Festival, with three performances on 19, 21 and 24 June 1950. It progressed to the Cheltenham Festival for two performances on 11 and 13 July, and to The Lyric Theatre, Hammersmith, for a twenty-one performance season of three weeks from 17 July to 5 August.
The cast and production forces were the following: Macheath, Bruce Boyce; Polly, Nancy Evans; Lucy, Rose Hill; Peachum, David Franklin; Lockit, Otakar Kraus; Mrs Peachum, Esther Salaman; Filch, Max Worthley; Mrs Trapes (also The Beggar), Gladys Parr; Mrs Coaxer, Esther Darlington; Betty Doxy, Mildred Watson; Jenny Diver, Lily Kettlewell; Suky Tawdry, Cecilia Cardozo; Dolly Trull, Mary Grimmett [not listed in programme book] Molly Brazen, Anne Sharp; Mat of the Mint, John Highcock; Ben Budge, Geoffrey Connor; Harry Paddington, Andrew Gold; Wat Dreary (and the Drawer), George Prangnell. A few cast changes were made in July and August when Jenny Diver was sung by Mary Grimmett except for two performances on 21 and 22 July when the part was sung by Lily Kettlewell.
The conductor was Norman Del Mar in Aldeburgh and Cheltenham, but conducting at The Lyric was shared with him by Edward Renton. English Opera Group Chamber Orchestra (leader, Hans Geiger); Producer, Basil Coleman; the stage and costume designs of Tanya Moiseiwitsch. were retained.
