The production opened officially at the Jubilee Hall, Aldeburgh, Suffolk on 11 June, 1960 and received three further performances there on 15, 22, 24 June. It was then taken to the Holland Festival with performances in Amsterdam (11 and 15 July), and the Hague (12 & 14 July). A complete performance had been given on Friday 10 June "for the purposes of recording" before an invited audience including members of the press.

At some Holland Festival performances there were cast changes for: Puck, Nicholas Chagrin; Helena, Joan Carlyle; Bottom, Roger Stalman/ Peter Forbes Robinson.
The English Opera Group Orchestra was conducted by the composer at the first performance, and on 11th and 14th July; at other performances by George Malcolm.
