The production opened at Snape Maltings as part of the Aldeburgh Festival on 4 and 5 Jun 1976. The cast were: Narrator/Ballad Singer Russell Smythe, Voice of Paul Bunyan Paul Maxwell, Western Union Boy Peter Savidge, Hel Helson Donald Stephenson, Sam Sharkey Paul Arden-Griffiths, Ben Benny John Rath, Fido Catherine Sydee, Moppet Lynn Barber, Poppet Brenda Mclean, Johnny Inkslinger Neil Jenkins, John Shears Michael Bauer, Hot Biscuit Slim Philip Doghan, Tiny Iris Saunders. Other parts (The Defeated, Frontier Women, Swedes, Lumberjacks, Trees, Wild Geese, Helson's Cronies, Heron, Squirrel, Wind, Moon and Beetle) were taken by: Sheila Brand, Frances Carr-Boyd, Rachel Cook, Jillian Crowe, Janice Hooper-Roe, Judith Jeffrey, Brenda McLean, Wendy Pashley, Judith Rees, Catherine Sydee, Anna Vincent, Anthony Attwell, David Bartleet, Christopher Booth-Jones, Michael Bulman, Glyn Davenport, Justin Lavender, Martin McEvoy, John Rath, Peter Savidge,Paul Whitmarsh. On tour in 1976 to Sadler's Wells, London (1-4, 25 Sep), Christ's Hospital, Horsham (4-6 Nov), Northcott Theatre, Exeter (8,9 Nov), Arts Centre Warwick University (11-13 Nov), Festival Theatre Malvern (15,16 Nov) Darlington Civic Theatre (18-20 Nov), Gaumont Theatre Doncaster (22-24 Nov), Sherman Theatre University College Cardiff (26,27 Nov), Nuffield Theatre Southampton University (29, 30 Nov), Gardner Centre Brighton (2-4 Dec), Gordon Craig Theatre Stevenage (6-8 Dec), returning to Snape Maltings (10, 11 Dec) there were some cast alternatives: Narrator Peter Lyon,Voice of Paul Bunyan Michael Follis,Tiny Judith Rees, Inkslinger Paul Whitmarsh, Slim Anthony Attwell, Shears Glyn Davenport, Fido Sheila Brand, Moppett Janice Hooper-Roe, Jenson Peter Savidge, Telegraph Boy Martin McEcvoy. Nicholas Kraemer became principal conductor with pianists David Parry, Stephen Westrop, percussion Anne Collis/Peter Hamburger, Guitar George Fenton/Dave Cook.
In 1978 the production visited the Rokoko-Theatre Schwetzingen (12, 14, 15 May) with Steuart Bedford as conductor and at the McRobert Centre Stirling (19,20 May) and Theatro della Pergola, Florence (22,23,25, 28 Jun) with Nicholas Kraemer.
