The Sadler's Wells Ballet production opened at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden on 1 January, 1957 and had 23 further performances, being 'tentatively received in the Royal Opera House during the next three years, but with favourable notices in New York, Munich and La Scala.' The principals were: Svetlana Beriosova, Princess Belle Rose; Julia Farron, Princess Belle Epine; David Blair, the Prince/Salamander; Leslie Edwards, the Emperor of the Middle Kingdom; Pirmin Trecu, the Fool; Ray Powell, the Dwarf; Desmond Doyle, the King of the North; Philip Chatfield, the King of the East; Peter Clegg, the King of the West; Gary Burne, the King of the South. The four Councillors were Christopher Newton, David Shields, John Sale, Richard Farley: the Courtiers, Mary Drage, Gerd Larsen, Brenda Taylor, Valerie Taylor, Meriel Evans, Stella Farrance, Catherine Boulton, Yvonne Cartier, Franklin White, Ronald Plaisted, Derek Rencher, Douglas Steuart, David Drew, David Boswell, Arnott Mader, Keith Rosson: the pages to the Kings, Christine Beckley, Mavis Osborn Debra Wayne, Ann Howard, Antoinette Sibley, Joan Benesh, Dorothea Zaymes, Angela Walton: the moon, Anya Linden; the four frogs, Keith Milland, Basil Thompson, William Wilson and William Morgan with other members of the Sadler's Wells Ballet as stars, clouds pagodas etc
In later performances Anya Linden danced the part of Princess Belle Rose; Ronald Hynd, the Prince; Rosemary Lindsay, Princess Belle Epine and David Boswell, the Fool.
