One photograph from the Hungarian State Puppet Theatre presentation of a two-act version of Cranko's story, adapted for the medium by Vera Bródy. This took place in the Danube Theatre, Budapest. After performances on 17 and 24 February and 3 and 17 March there were further performances in April and May. Performing materials for Britten's music were sent to Hungary, but it has never been ascertained whether these, or extracts from the original Decca recording were used. The theatre only seating 380, it is unlikely that a full-size orchestra was employed.
The members of the cast were: Princess Belle Rose, Márta Szakály; Princess Belle Epine, Mara Rebrö; The Emperor of the Middle Kingdom, István Erdös; the Prince of the Pagodas, Imre Pataky; the King of the North, Gitta Kárpáti; King of the East, Péter Levente; King of the West, Lajos Váranyi; King of the South, Irén Kaszner; the Fool, Henrik Kemény; the Dwarf, Henrik Gyurkö.
