The first performances were at Orford Church, 10, 17, 20, 22, 25, 28 June, during the 1968 Aldeburgh Festival. The varied casts for these, drawn from the English Opera Group, were as follows:- The Tempter (The Abbot) Peter Pears/Gregory Dempsey/ Robert Tear; The Father John Shirley-Quirk/Bryan Drake; The Elder Son Bryan Drake/ Benjamin Luxon/ Malcolm Rivers; The Younger Son Robert Tear/ Bernard Dickerson: Chorus of Servants, Parasites and Beggars Paschal Allen, Peter Bedford, Carl Duggan, David Hartley, Peter Leeming, John McKenzie, Clive Molloy, Paul Wade: Young Servants and Distant Voices Robert Alder, John Harriman, Peter Heriot, Richard Kahn, David Morgan. The instrumentalists, from the English Chamber Orchestra were: Richard Adeney (flute), Philip Jones (trumpet), Neill Sanders (horn), Cecil Aronowitz (viola) Keith Marjoram (double bass) Osian Ellis/Brian Wilson (harp) James Blades (percussion) Philip Ledger/Alan Brown (organ).
