1954-1957
The first performance took place on 14 September 1954 at Teatro La Fenice, Venice, as part of the annual Festival of Contemporary Music. The second night was 16 September.
The cast for the first performance was: Jennifer Vyvyan, Governess; Joan Cross, Mrs Grose; Peter Pears, Quint; Arda Mandikian, Miss Jessel; David Hemmings, Miles; Olive Dyer, Flora. Producer, Basil Coleman; Designer, John Piper; English Opera Group Orchestra conducted by Benjamin Britten.
The same cast performed the UK premiere at Sadler's Wells, 6 October 1954, continuing the run on 8, 11 and 16 October but from the Continental tour of May 1955 Lotte Medak shared the part of Mrs Grose with Joan Cross. From October 1955 Michael Hartnett shared the role of Miles, Maria Zeri that of Flora and Gerald English, Quint.
The production was initially intended for the 1953 Venice Biennale but had to be postponed.
