This production, the culmination of a study course on the opera by the Britten-Pears School for Advanced Musical Studies, opened at the Maltings, Snape on 11 June as part of the 1983 Aldeburgh Festival. A second performance, on 17 June, was preceded by a lecture on the opera as Chamber Music and followed on 18 June by a forum discussion by those involved in the original production.
The cast on 11 June was: Prologue/Peter Quint, Ian Christopher; the Governess, Lynne Dawson; Miles, Martin Phipps; Flora, Maria Bovino; Mrs Grose, Anne Todd; Miss Jessel, Anna Steiger.
On 17 June the cast was: Prologue/Peter Quint, Stanley Warren; the Governess, Helen Charnock; Miles, Adam Ashton; Flora, Mary Seers; Mrs Grose, Marion Olsen; Miss Jessel, Marcia Swanston.
Both performances were conducted by George Malcolm and accompanied by the Britten-Pears Orchestra. The producer was Basil Coleman; Lighting Designer, Roger Weaver; Company Manager, John Owen; Stage Manager, Alastair Creamer; Costume supervisor, Susan Wilson; Technical manager, Bob Ling; Répétiteurs, Richard Balcombe, Nancy Cooley and Stephen Westrup; Assistant stage manager, Lee Warren; Wardrobe, Susan Iles; Electricals producer, Kevin Peacock; Stage crew, Andrew Buchanan, Julian Knight with Mark Stevens and Christopher Caldwell on 11th and with David Nice on 17th.
